Now that I’m in my twenties, when I look back I appreciate growing up outside of Boston. The live music venues here feature everything from huge international acts like Madonna at The Garden to underground hip hop shows.
When I was in high school, if you wanted to get in badly enough you found a way. The easiest was to make friends in the band (and not via MySpace). If that didn’t work, then there was always plan B: writing a new birthday on your drivers permit and photo-copying it.

Once again, the Merrimack Repertory Theatre has successfully brought to my attention a production very much worth watching. Last month, I ventured over to the MRT to see “A View of the Harbor” by Richard Dresser, which offered a witty peek into a socially impaired family from Maine. However, last night’s opening performance of “Tranced”, by Bob Clyman, sparked my interest through the use of thrilling psychological issues and a complex, twisting plot. Still able to maintain a tactfully brilliant ...

Fugakyu has masterful Japanese food, but if one feature of the restaurant stands above the others, it’s the complimentary ambiance. From the authentically costumed wait staff to the soothing images projected on the upper walls, Fugakyu is worth a visit for the looks alone, but fortunately the restaurant is by no means skin deep. The food is quite exceptional, if on the pricy side. The sushi sails in to your table on boats and bridges the more extravagant the order, the fancier the container will...

While being possibly the weirdest movie since Mulholland Dr., The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is also tragic and beautiful. Button is born with the looks of an old man but grows younger with age, and tries to fulfill all the usual human desires. The movie is full of breathtaking shots of American landscapes that become the backdrop for the hero’s romance and travails. However, Button’s curious case ensures that the movie does not become horrifically boring like the English Patient or Meet Jo...

Wednesday nights are “strictly Sinatra” nights at Red Sky. However, Sinatra was on vacation as of Wednesday February 11, 2009, depriving me of what I can only assume would have been the pleasure of robbing a bank with Ocean’s Eleven. Since I had taken the green line all the way from Newton, I decided my only option was to stay and eat. I ordered a $2 Heineken and an appetizer of boneless chicken wings with buffalo sauce.
My stomach was turning in on itself from hunger as I looked aroun...

Slumdog Millionaire left my jaw on the ground. In this globally acclaimed film we follow two brothers, Salim and Jamal, as they learn how to hustle throughout India. Their circumstances and their wits create a fabulous story which is intertwined with Jamal’s appearance on India’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire. It becomes obvious that the luxuries of middle class values are a burden in these circumstances, but also the services and culture that any middle class anywhere depends on is upheld by th...

A square room with rolling padded benches and wooden end tables, unadorned walls with simple lighting and large windows open to the lights of the street is all that makes up Middlesex. Unique to Boston, this minimalist lounge relies on the bar for a hint of glam and glitz, and carries quite the appeal among young professionals.
Friday night brought out colorful individuals to this effortless space, as a line of those dedicated to joining the party formed outside its doors. Those who enter...

"He's Just Not That Into You" VIP party, followed by a screening of the movie, was held February 2nd at The District in Downtown Boston. Two hundred women -and maybe two men attended the very chic event. Cosmopolitans were held high as the women of the Boston social scene gathered to celebrate the premier.
"What's the worst line a guy's ever used on you to end a relationship?" One woman asked a fellow attendee.
"They don't end it. I do!" was her sassy response. Glasses were clinked...

Best-selling book, “He’s Just Not that Into You” turned into a romantic comedy with welcome substance. Writer Greg Behrendt of Sex and the City, made an impact with the episode “He’s Just Not That Into You,” then wrote the book with Liz Tuccillo, which then snowballed into the movie adaptation.
The universal concept is shown in a myriad of ways through the different characters. We are drawn into the lives of men and women who are in relationships, looking for relationships, and trying to...

Tucked away around the corner from the 1369 Coffee House on Cambridge Street is Ole' Mexican Grill, it is intimate and cozy. The restaurant creates a tangible aura with dim lights, candles, sponge painted walls, and authentic photos. The booths are just big enough for two people and their coats, so you don’t end up feeling like you are driving a VW Beetle with bucket seats. This entire ambience helps you ignore the people around you while you talk with your company and wait for your food. ...
